Mi aventura en la Selva (Peru: 20 Mayo-10 Junio)

A glimpse of my adventure to Peru in the Amazon..

Our first project was at a special needs school in the city of Iquitos:
Playing with the kids, of course :)

Paiting a mural

Painting chalkboards onto the wall

The final mural (the middle done by professional artists in Iquitos)

The mode of transportation through Iquitos..motos. The city can only be reached by boat or plane.

The poorest section of Iquitos...Belen. The houses float on the water and move up and down with the fluctuating levels of the river.

The gas station

The four and a half hour ride downriver on the local taxi boat to our first destination, Monkey Island.

Keeping busy, making things to trade

These two LOVED being held

Our beds while downriver.

Our showers..the river.

Setting up a reading and sunglasses clinic in the first village.

Emtering the main square of the next village

One of the familes I spent a day shadowing.

SO many different kinds of bananas!

Jen of the jungle. haha.

Typical boat

I was not about to bathe where I caught a pirahna the day before..

BEAUTIFUL sunsets

We brought tshirts for the kids to make their own.

And the kids performed traditional dances for us.

Tiny monkey who lived around the lodge

I LOVED the kids there!!! There were definitely some I would have liked to take home with me. haha.

At the eyeglasses clinic. :)

Layne explaining the importance of sunglasses while on the river

We made a little library with bookshelves.

And this is what their roofs are made of.

Learning how to make fans.

Laynes quilt square we made with the kids.

Be careful with snakes..

..because they can poop on your bags.

The biggest trees I have EVER seen!

Fishing..or tanning?

Time to relax

Henna like ink from a jungle fruit

Lenas 19th birthday party

A visit to an Indian tribe

Teaching us their traditional dances

Armed coast guard on our boat..pretty creepy.
